Can I include my own published articles in my thesis?
Answer
In general, you cannot include the final published version of your article in the thesis that is uploaded to the ULIR and you should check with the publisher to determine your rights. This is also true for accepted papers and articles which you plan to submit to a journal, and you should check with the publisher to ensure that uploading your thesis to an open access repository does not interfere with pending publications. In many cases, however, you may be able to include another version of your article or arrange to redact it from the final thesis. You can contact the ULIR admin (ir@ul.ie) who will be happy to advise you. See SAA Student Academic Handbook, Appendix 2, section 3.3.2.
If you are submitting an article-based thesis, you should present your thesis in manuscript style and not as a journal formatted articles. See SAA Student Academic Handbook, Appendix 2, section 3.2 Format and Presentation of the Article-based PhD.
